How Much Did It Take For Your Rep To SELL YOU OUT On Healthcare?

Last Thursday, House Republicans passed legislation, 217-213, aimed at repealing some important parts of Obamacare. Specifically, the parts that a lot of low-income Americans rely to stay ALIVE and healthy with. And no matter what sanctimonious twist of words or excuse your representative might give, I want YOU, the reader, to know that your Representative, who voted YES to this bill, accepted money from industries whose BEST interest is to make sure that money is made from the health care of human beings – more specifically, human beings who have disabilities, who are old, who are poor.

First and foremost, to find your representative, enter your zip code here: http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/

Once you get their info, look down at the list below to not only see if they voted YES to this bill – but also how much money they received from the ‘Health Professionals’ industry, the ‘Hospitals & Nursing Homes’ industry, ‘Health Services’ industry and the ‘Pharmaceuticals & Health Products’ industry. If you or someone you love might be affected by this bill, the amount of money you see next to your representative’s name is the amount it took for them to gamble with your life.

Livid isn’t enough of a word to describe the feeling of being pushed around by our politicians. But it’s one entirely different feeling to have people who are supposed to vote for the WELL BEING of their fellow Americans, and instead, decide to vote in accordance to who gave them money. It’s legalized bribery and gambling, but with human lives.

Is your representative listed here? How about you give them a call and remind them that 2018 is right around the corner.

Carly Hammond, Sam Conver, Mario Diaz and Graceanne Parks contributed to reporting and research.

  1. The source information for this chart was obtained from followthemoney.org , who gets thier information from FEC filings. They total all health related industries, and we chose to break it down so the information is more transparent.

  2. The problem is, we never really had health care to begin with. The reason why is that the US signed away any potential right to have free services (if they were being sold) in 1994 when President Clinton signed the URAA which instantiated the US’s participation in the WTO, The US sees it as vitally important for the health insurance industry, which employes over 300,000 Americans to export health insurance and our health insurance model to other countries. How could it do that if healthcare could become a human right? This also helps the profitability of our pharmaceuticals. The US stands against generic drugs also. Because sometimes its hard for politicians to say “we dont care, and we won’t help you” the WTO took it out of their hands 22 years ago, giving politicians plausible deniability.

You can read more in the Public Handbook of Trade in Services.

Also, here is an excellent video. Now its 18 years later and it shows. The US and our captured media, politics and “social” networks are simulacra “This is what corporate rule looks like”.

  3. Note, I am sorry, I said free when I meant to say “below market cost”. The technical description of it is that nothing the government does can be any more burdensome (to corporations) than the most minimally trade restrictive measure that will accomplish the goal. This includes trade with foreign countries. So clearly the US is now looking to foreign countries to solve its health care affordability problem. Developing countries are no strangers to tiers based on finances, Poor people just like you and me die there every day because they dont have the money for a $5 medicine. And Americans look the other way, confident that we are not in that situation. But, the fact is, we are no better than them, and often they have a better education. (and the US would like that drug price to be higher.) How could we accomplish that long cherished goal of eliminating cheap lifesaving generic drugs- without the leverage that only trading Americans now-stable jobs away will provide? Its not pretty. So we can see why they want us all to be distracted as long as possible.
