Protesters March in Chicago to Remove the Balbo Monument

50 protestors joined in solidarity to demand the removal of the Italo Balbo Monument located in the Gold Star Families Park and Memorial, Chicago, IL. The statue was a gift from Italian fascist leader, Benito Mussolini in 1934 to commemorate General Italo Balbo on his flight to Chicago in 1933 for the Century of Progress World’s Fair. I followed them to the monument of Christopher Columbus where they were met with at least 30 Chicago police officers. The officers circled around the monument, using their bicycles to barricade the statue as protestors asked, “Who are you protecting?” The crowd dispersed peacefully shortly after.
