Hundreds of activists gathered in downtown Kalamazoo on September 5 to send a message of love, solidarity and defiance in response to Trump’s decision to rescind DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). The demonstration, organized by leaders from Michigan United, Michigan for Revolution, ProKzoo and Movimiento Cosecha Kalamazoo, rallied in Bronson Park before marching to the intersection of Westnedge and W. Michigan. The march then culminated in a direct action as eight people formed a human chain that shut down the intersection and blocked traffic for a mile. The action specifically sought to call white allies to stand up and exercise their privilege in service of their undocumented brothers and sisters, as the eight white activists chose to risk arrest while centering and uplifting the voices of DACA student speakers. Police arrested the eight and took them into custody, releasing them shortly afterwards with misdemeanor charges.
