  1. Extremely timely and informative for all parents and young adults/children as we have a serious crisis in America and it crosses all economic borders. Young people are being drawn to drugs and alcohol that combined or used separately, forever change their lives, sadly some ending in tragic deaths. The youth of our country depends upon adults willingness to take responsibility. Making public places that are supervised and safe a priority is one step in the right direction. What this author is begging of us is that we consider the ramifications of our inaction to provide space for kids to gather and “hang out” to socialize in an environment that welcomes them. Activities and projects that are fun and educational are also helpful. Sponsoring programs that inspire, educate, and enable young people is vital. I’m glad to see a young person take the initiative and reach out to his community with such energy! Bravo!

  2. Local residents, fire departments, and other local organizations donated money to build this thing. We should all get our money back/

  3. This is privatization at work, going on all across our country, business increase profit by privatizing the benefits and socialize the costs. Sickening that our children bare the brunt.

  4. Great bit!!! It’s almost unbelievable that the town pays the Y for them to turn a profit in a venue that built with donations. Hey I want to open a gym can they help me!!! This needs to be protested!!!

  5. Southampton built a youth Center and turned it over to a local contractor for one dollar in pertuity. The have a big staff and board that are all salaried.. The classes are very expsensive, swimming lessons for a family are not affordable for the middle class. The have many exspensive sports camps they lease to in the summer. Plus an all year round tennis tent ! Our taxpayer money was used to build this for the community youth. Not for private profit. Looks like East Hampton will be screwed too !

  6. Thank you for bringing this problem up!

Its not about the problem for kids specifically, which is getting worse and its really important, BUT, if anybody wants to know what’s behind the (inter)national scourge of *privatization*, this next link is a good start: https://perma.cc/BB3B-M44U
